Encounters with the Law

You do not have to be a lawyer to learn the law!

When one skeptic questioned how I could know the law without being a lawyer, I pointed out that legal information is fully available to the public in this country, and I put together this list of persons, places, and things which I have encountered in my various legal wanderings: Oh, and I have visited the Franklin Pierce Law Center (a law school) but I didn't learn much there (except how little honest lawyers earn).

The above list shows lawyers do not have a monopoly on legal information. In fact, there is no law preventing any person from giving legal advice. In my state, New Hampshire, you do not even need to be a lawyer to represent somebody in court; any person of good character may do it.

Unfortunately, I do not have the time to give web visitors legal advice.

If you have a legal problem and want more information about the law as it pertains to you, I recommend the above resources. Be sure to ask the librarians for help; they can help you find the materials that pertain to your issues. Read, ask questions of government employees (and keep asking and ask others until you get the answers you deserve), and keep learning.
