My brother Alex and I met in Houston and took off for New Zealand on May 10. We landed about 14½ hours later on May 12, so May 11 just vanished.

We landed very early, 5:30, but the hotel had a room available, so that was nice. I drove from the airport into the city. So that was my first experience driving on the left, in an unfamiliar car, with the driver’s seat on the right, with some controls (turn signals and windshield wipers) switched and some not (brake and gas), with unfamiliar road signs, at night, jet-lagged. I think it might have been raining, too, but I cannot remember.

We got a lot done for a first day in the country: Visit the aquarium, cross the city to see the aviation hall of the Museum of Transport and Technology, ride the museum’s tram, and visit the technology area. Alex rested at the hotel while I walked to two chocolate stores (several miles, and Auckland is a bit hilly).

Is this a useful way to serve salt and pepper? How do you add each to food in a controlled manner? Also, that pepper is mild, not black pepper.

It has a damaged flipper but was doing a pretty good job of snapping up clams, holding the meat with its beak, and pulling the rest of the clam away.
