Alex took a train to a model train convention in Wangaratta, so I was on my
own for two days and a bit.
Transit in Melbourne is okay. You need a card (unlike Sydney, where you can pay
by credit card via iPhone) but they are easy to get (unlike Wellington). Daily
fare is capped at something like twice your farthest trip (involving zones
somehow), so you do not have worry about it after hitting the limit. Trams
apparently do not enjoy priority for intersections or traffic signals.
Melbourne has a lot of “laneways,” which are small side streets that used to be
unattractive alleys until they hired a European city planner who said make them
nice. So now some are used for café seating and shopping, some have street art,
and so on.
Melbourne is a bustling, active city. The surrounding areas I visited seemed
calmer but were still well served by transit. After exploring some of the city
center, I went south to find chocolate, see the beach, and check on a
prospective pink lake.
Unfortunately, it was a former pink lake. Then I returned to the city and went
east for more chocolate.
