As promised, close ups of two historic ads in Museum Station are below. We took the train from here to the airport, direct, and flew to Yulara, where Uluṟu (Ayers Rock) is.

The town and the resort of Yulara exist largely for the tourist travel to Uluṟu. The nearest major town, Alice Springs, is 268 miles away. Most residents work for the resort or tour operators. After competing hotels failed, a consortium was arranged, so the hotels are currently operated by one company, under the aegis of some mix of aboriginal tribes and Australian government. Prices match, although they are not outrageous given the conditions. Rooms and tours are limited, so I recommend booking at least six months early. Prefer the free ranger tour at the park and tours with aboriginal participation. (Speaking of travel arrangements, be sure your JetStar carry-on luggage is at most 7 kg, or 14 kg if you book through Qantas or upgrade. JetStar weighs all carry-on luggage.)

We stayed at Desert Gardens Hotel, which was aging but well maintained. Uluṟu is still a twenty-minute drive away, and visiting it was planned for the next day, so we explored the resort, picked up Powerade and other supplies at its grocery store, and had dinner. Tomorrow’s photos will be lots of images of parts of Uluṟu from various perspectives.

Both are rocks pushed out of the Earth, but Uluṟu is soft sandstone monolith while Kata Tjuṯa is a harder conglomerate largely of granite and basalt.
